It seems to me like the A/B group would benefit from pacelining. The club website mentions that the B group does paceline.. however, it seems like only a few people actually take turns at the front(which is not pacelining)! Maybe one sunday in the near future we should discuss the mecanics and benefits of pacelining before departing for the ride. It should only take a minute or two, and will help the front group become a stronger/faster group.

Amen. The group would really benefit if we actually tried to get a paceline going and kept it going during the ride. 20-30 seconds on the front and rotate back.
It will take some practice but it sure would add a new level of fun....and SPEED.

The faster version of the paceline is to never stay at the front - but rather constantly rotate. It consists of two lines, the one on the left moving slightly faster than the one on the right. As soon as a rider gets to the front, he moves over to the head of the right line and starts shifting back. As soon as he gets to the end of that line, he shifts to the tail of the left and starts moving up again. Both lines are moving faster than a standard paceline, and no one is being worn out by being in the front.

Michael, the paceline you are describing is ... very very effective, fun and fast. The time that any 1 person spends in the "front" can be as little as 5 seconds... I rode with the Cal Pools/Dewalt race team and this paceline is the one that they use!!! The 42 mile out and back race had an average speed of 23.4 mph!!!!

Sounds GREAT! Let's do it.
We are going to need some rides without lights or at least as few as possible. The hardest part will be getting the guys to line up after having to stop at the signals.
